The central tower of York Minster reaches 72 metres above the medieval street grid, its lantern stage completed in 1472 after a construction pause caused by the collapse of the original Norman crossing tower in 1407.
The rebuilding took six decades and required engineers to sink foundations through thirteen metres of Roman, Viking and Saxon archaeology before reaching stable clay. Today the tower stands as the culminating achievement of English Perpendicular Gothic, its weight distributed across four massive piers that each measure five metres square at their base.
York Minster remains the largest medieval cathedral in Northern Europe by volume, its nave spanning 76 metres in length and rising 27 metres to the vault. The structure preserves over half of all medieval stained glass surviving in England, including the Great East Window — completed in 1408 by glazier John Thornton of Coventry and containing 311 panels depicting the beginning and end of the world as understood by 15th-century theology. The Five Sisters Window in the north transept holds the oldest complete glass in the building, five lancets of grisaille dating to 1260 and standing 16 metres tall.
The tower climb forms part of the admission experience, accessed via a spiral staircase built into the south-west corner of the structure. The route passes through the triforium gallery, where medieval masons stored templates and hoisting equipment, and continues to the ringing chamber housing fourteen bells including Great Peter, a bourdon bell cast in 1845 and weighing nearly eleven tonnes. The final section ascends through the lantern to an external platform offering sightlines across the Vale of York, the Howardian Hills, and the city's circuit of 13th-century walls.
Conservation work proceeds continuously. Between 1967 and 1972 engineers stabilised the central tower after cracks appeared in the south-west pier, injecting grout into voids left by deteriorating mortar and installing a concealed steel framework. The Chapter House, an octagonal structure completed around 1290 and lacking a central column, underwent structural reinforcement in 2016 to address stone decay in its canopied niches.
